Hello again! I hope you all had a wonderful spring break and I’m happy to be back writing more recommendations. This time, I’ll be covering what I read over the last week.
Notes on an Execution by Danya Kukafka (50/10)
- This book was visceral. It really makes you think and take a good look at yourself after reading. I genuinely had to take twenty minutes to process and collect my thoughts after finishing this.
- We follow four people as their lives intersect and change throughout the course of forty some-odd years, with the added addition of one being a serial killer on Death Row. Kukafka is an immaculate author, allowing the reader to immerse themselves into the lives of the characters on the page – not just seeing it, but living it. We really ask ourselves why we like true crime, why the serial killer gets all the glory when girls have died, and why we keep endorsing media like true crime documentaries and the audience that follows.
- If you like true crime in any way, shape or form, then this book is definitely for you.
The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah (100/10)
- This book broke my heart. It’s so insanely well written and presents a hidden perspective of a woman’s world during World War 2. Needless to say, I cried many times while reading this. It is beautiful and heartbreaking and unforgettable.
- We follow two sisters in France throughout the war as they learn to live and survive while the Germans occupy their homes and the war intensifies. Hannah is an extraordinary author, presenting a perspective that is largely ignored by most. Being a woman during the mid-20th century essentially meant you were invisible, but that didn’t mean you couldn’t make a difference. From hiding Jewish children to helping downed airmen, the sisters show an unforgettable journey of love, loss, and family — no matter how far away they are.
- If you like historical fiction, classics, and heavy-hitting novels, then this book is definitely for you.
Thank you so much for reading and stay tuned for more recommendations!
