“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Lawyer and revolutionary Nelson Mandela, said.
Mandela was not the only one to see the value in education, so has TCHS senior Ja’miah Hicks.
“I think college is important. I mean, it might sound simple, but just an education, overall, you can never be too educated, and in the world that we live in education can get you so far” Senior and future UT Austin student Ja’Miah Hicks said in regard to why she chooses to seek higher education.
Current Yale student and TCHS alumni Ramy Triki shares sentiment about benefits of higher education.
”There’s a whole world of opportunities.” Triki said,”in college, there is never a bad time to figure out what you’re passionate about, to pursue it, because ultimately, whatever you do decide to do, it should be something that fulfills you, and you’re excited to do, because those will be the things that you excel in.”
TCHS Senior and future Dartmouth student Chloe Park is excited about new opportunities and possibilities.
“As much as I say, I’m gonna miss the colony, I think that I’m excited about a change of atmosphere, because I’ve never gone anywhere outside of Texas. I think it’ll be a really cool experience to see what life is like over there and meet a bunch of new people.”
Hicks thinks along the same lines.
“I’m honestly most excited for the independence that I’ll receive, being able to navigate life on my own and just kind of get that feel of being an adult and everything.” Hicks said.
Hicks also speaks on the ways TC has prepared her.
”I think academics here, especially with having the opportunity of the collegiate academy, has helped prepare me because it’s shown me how to, take initiative of my learning, how to study on my own, how to reach out and how to really connect and find those extra resources that might be hidden in syllabus or things like that, just to really use your resources, especially once you get to college.” Hicks said.
Triki had similar things to say.
“One of the great things about the colony even though it is not one of the notorious feeder schools that sends kids to top institutions is the freedom that we have.” Triki said. “TC really allowed me to explore all the things that I was interested in rather than keeping me locked into one.”
Many students may become discouraged at their prospects but TC is more than willing to offer resources to students and help them along. The Colony High-School and the people in it want nothing but to see students succeed.
